Welcome to Candle Magick!
In my solitary practices and in my practices with my Coven I have done a lot of candle magick over the years. In fact it's one of my favorite types of spells to cast for many reasons. One, it's simple. Two, the tools are always easy to come by. Three it gives me something to focus my energies into...the flame.
Candle magick normally takes three basic steps to perform. First you select and carve your candle. We will discuss appropriate colors in a moment. The carvings you make with your athame into the wax are completely subjective and up to you. You may carve in archaic symbols such as rune stones. You may carve God and Goddess symbols into it. Possibly Zodiac symbols. Dollar signs are acceptable. Whatever means something to you. And you don't have to be Picasso to pull it off! Always a plus in my book.
Second you will anoint your candle with some type of oil. You may apply the oil to the candle in any manner you see fit. Some do this by starting at the middle and then working first upwards and then done. It's up to you, you will find a pattern which is right for you. The type of oil you choose should be closely associated with the type of spell you are casting. If you're doing a banishing spell then Lotus oil is appropriate. Something for love or attractiveness then Rose or Jasmine are best. You will learn by doing over time, these are just a few examples.
Third is the will. Here you take a clean piece of paper and write upon it what you are wishing for, praying for, attempting to bring into your life..whatever. This may be as long or as short as you see fit and may say anything that you see fit. But it should be concise and direct, wish for exactly what you want.
During the entire process above you are concentrating your energies on the step you are performing, on the candle itself, on what you are attempting to will into being. You are giving the spell the initial energy it needs to spring forth into life. Take your time at all steps, do not hurry, proceed to the next step only when you feel you are ready.
Lastly comes the lighting of the candle. It is best to place the candle upon a magick mirror so that its energies will be reinforced in the reflection of the glass. As to lighting the candle, when you do state your purpose for doing so. You may see fit to chant while you light the candle or to ask for the blessing of a God or Goddess while doing so. Stare into and concentrate upon the flame as it takes light and begin to burn, w hen you feel ready take your will and hold it in the flame. Move it slowly into the fire as far as you can before tossing it into the cauldron or other fireproof container. Watch the flames as it burns. You may wish to chant again over the flame as it burns. Allow the candle to burn completely out, do not blow out. Snuff it out if you must...never leave an open flame unattended!!!...and re-light as soon as possible OR whenever you feel the need to re-cast the spell.
Saving your sacred wax is a great way to make new candles! Take all left overs and store them until you have enough to melt down to make another candle. This is a great way to make new altar candles, as they will contain all the left over energies of the previous magickal workings you have performed.
If candle magick spells are to be performed by a group, each should have their own candle to cast their own personal spell. All candles should be lit in unison from the center altar candle. Also, a special larger candle may be carved by the group and anointed by the group for a spell which involved the entire group or is specifically for the group itself. In this case once the spell has been cast and all have lit their individual candles all then light the Coven Candle with them.
